Electric Vehicle (EV) Safety Induction for Port Staff

A Practical Introduction to EV Safety Procedures for Port Personnel
Ensure your port staff are fully prepared to identify and manage electric vehicle (EV) hazards with our comprehensive safety induction course. This training equips personnel with the knowledge to recognise potential risks, implement safe working practices, and respond effectively to EV-related incidents. By fostering hazard awareness, reducing operational risks, and supporting a strong safety culture, the course helps your port operate more efficiently and in compliance with evolving safety standards.

About the Course

Electric vehicles aren’t just a trend. They’re the new reality in port operations. The UK government’s 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles is coming. Many ports target full electrification by 2040. EV safety knowledge is becoming as essential as traditional port safety skills. This course transforms complex EV technology into practical, actionable safety knowledge. It protects your staff and your port’s operations. You’ll learn to work confidently with quiet electric equipment. You’ll identify potentially dangerous battery conditions. You’ll play your part in your port’s successful transition to cleaner technology. Designed specifically for frontline port staff using clear, accessible language, this course transforms complex EV jargon into actionable safety knowledge. This training course ensures that all port workers understand their essential role in maintaining workplace safety as the maritime industry transitions to cleaner, electric-powered operations.

Aim of the Course

The aim of the course is to equip port personnel with the knowledge to work safely around Electric Vehicles (EVs) in port environments. Given the unique risks posed by electric vehicles (EVs), including their silent operation, lithium-ion battery hazards, and the potential for thermal runaway, this training provides detailed guidance on EV safety awareness, how to identify potentially hazardous EVs, and the appropriate response actions. Learners will clearly understand the essential role of all port workers in maintaining EV safety when handling RoRo/PCTCs or car carriers.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this comprehensive course, port staff will be able to:

  • Recognise the difference between EVs and diesel-powered vehicles and understand why they are appearing in ports.
  • Identify the main types of EVs and equipment relevant to port operations.
  • Dispel common but untrue myths about EVs that could affect your safety decisions.
  • Learn how EVs can become unsafe and spot the signs of battery or EV damage.
  • Understand their essential role in maintaining your port’s EV safety.
Learning Outcomes

By enrolling your port staff on our EV safety induction training, you will help:

  1. Build a safety culture around EVs in your port.
  2. Prepare your teams for future growth as EV cargo volumes increase and electrification becomes the industry standard.
  3. Reduce liability and demonstrate diligence in meeting health and safety obligations as EVs become standard port equipment and cargo.
  4. Protect port assets, infrastructure and reputation from potential EV fire damage through early hazard recognition.
