ABS Approved, Lithium-ion Battery Safety Awareness for Superyachts

Mitigating Risk Through Proactive Training

To assist the Superyacht Community mitigate the serious and costly risks associated with thermal runaway of Lithium-ion batteries on board these luxury vessels, VIRSEC have partnered with subject matter expert, and accomplished maritime author, Gerard Pollock to provide an informative, content relevant, and affordable eLearning course.

This fully online and ABS Approved course covers the relevant areas associated with Li-ion Competent Person, drawing from the UK’s Code of Safe Working Practices and MGN 681, the ISM Code 6.3 & 6.5, and the STCW Convention Regulation I/14-5 Compliance.

Ideally suited for yacht crew, staff, and shoreside managers of yachts that carry Lithium-ion battery-powered tenders, ‘toys’, and equipment. The course consists of eight short lessons providing an in-depth study of the electrochemistry and hazards of Lithium-ion batteries. The philosophy underpinning this course is that ‘prevention is better than cure’, and the course sets out the best practices that can be easily implemented to mitigate associated risks of Li-ion technology.
